Questions and Answers for students

Question: Who comes to the Fox Valley Literacy Coalition for help?
Answer: Our learners are adults -- young and old. Some of them have jobs and others are looking for a job. Some have had an education, while others have not had this opportunity. They might be single or married; they might be parents or grandparents. Some were born and raised right here in the Fox Valley, while others are from countries around the world.

Question: How do I become a student?
Answer: First, a new student meets with a staff person and together they determine the learner's strengths and learning goals. The learner is then matched with a volunteer who has received training to become a tutor. Tutors prepare lesson plans to meet the needs of each individual learner. The  tutor and learner meet for lessons once per week for at least an hour. The learner's progress is measured by periodic evaluations.

Question: Do I have to take tests?
Answer: It is our mission to help people improve their reading and speaking skills. The only way we can tell how well WE are doing is by evaluating the learner's skills. We do evaluations to measure how well skills are improving. However, you do not have to study for these tests! And there is no passing or failing!

Question: How much does it cost?
Answer: The help you get from the Fox Valley Literacy Coalition is free. If you are able to make a donation to pay for your books or workbooks, we would be very grateful, but it is not a requirement.

Question: Who pays for all of this?
Answer: Our largest funder is the United Way Fox Cities. The rest of our operating support comes from generous people, local businesses, large employers, family foundations, and churches. We rely on the generosity of the community and currently receive no "government" grants. We raise this money so that our services are free to our clients.

Question: How do I sign up?
