Our Clients
Fox Valley Literacy provides free one-to-one tutoring for a diverse population of students age 18 and above. Over half of our students are in the 30 to 50 year age range.
Our Volunteers
Fox Valley Literacy's volunteers are passionate literacy advocates. Tutors make an initial commitment of one year and receive extensive training prior to certification. Volunteers annually donate over 9,000 hours of service.
Our Organization
Fox Valley Literacy,  a proud member agency of United Way Fox Cities, relies solely on contributions from private donors. We are not supported by any government or church-sponsored entity. We train volunteer tutors and match them with adult learners from Outagamie, Calumet, and Waupaca counties who want to improve their literacy skills. Founded in 1990, Fox Valley Literacy is a member of ProLiteracy America, the U.S. program division of ProLiteracy Worldwide.

Our Mission

Fox Valley Literacy is a community-based nonprofit organization that trains volunteers to provide client-focused adult literacy education to people in the Fox Cities area. We believe that a person’s quality of life is enhanced by literacy through the ability to read for pleasure, achieve educational goals, improve employment skills, and function as a member of the community. We partner with people who desire to improve their adult basic education or English language learning skills.

When you can't read...
. . . you are denied information many people take for granted. Job applications, menus, street signs, prescription labels, billboards, mail, and even this website are inaccessible.

When you can read...
. . . you enter a world of new opportunities.
One out of every five adults in the United States
is functionally illiterate.
The Need for Literacy
Approximately 12,000 adults in Outagamie County alone. Illiteracy is closely linked to poverty, unemployment and health issues. Children of low literate parents face a high risk of growing up illiterate. Helping an adult learn to read can improve the situation of an entire family. Most adult learners seek our help so they can participate in their children's learning, obtain a GED or diploma, or improve their job skills so they can better support their families. At any time, there are around 30 students on our waiting list.
