"I decided to join the Literacy Coalition as a tutor after I experienced living in a country that did not speak my native language. I learned quickly how wonderful it is to have someone willing to help you learn in a fun and comfortable environment. During my time living abroad, I was fortunate to have people willing to help me. I hope that I bring some comfort and help to people at the Literacy Coalition as did others for me."
"Very few things in this life bring me as much joy and pleasure as the magic and mystery of words. In fact, the experience of opening a book and losing myself in a completely new and wondrous world has become a kind of staple in my life, right up there with salt and sugar. One thing that beats it (hands down!) though is the experience of sharing those words and that joy with another person of seeing her face the first time she comprehends and knowing that you helped her to reach that moment.. THAT'S WHY I TUTOR."
The stories we hear from our tutors . . .
"I didn't realize how much you can learn by teaching! It's very interesting to learn about another culture and at the same time feeling a sense of accomplishment by teaching the English language to someone. It's fun and rewarding."
"As a tutor I feel I also learn things from my students about their culture, lifestyles, etc. I find it rewarding to see my students improve in their reading, writing, and speaking skills. Mostly, it is gratifying to see that with such a small time commitment one can make such a big difference in another person's life."

"This language thing is kind of a natural for me. I kind of found my element. Life has been good to me. That's why I got into volunteering. I admire people who can fluently speak Spanish or German. When I retired I got into German because of my heritage. I used to travel a lot when I worked for the State of Wisconsin. Now I don't have to; I'm able to travel the world through my students."
"Let us encourage and celebrate our ability to read and write. Let us communicate with each other and the world.

I grew up in a family who valued reading and encouraged curiosity. And I was fortunate to marry an author and story-teller with whom I could share my passion for books."
