"Learning to speak English helps me at work and helps me understand English."
"When people have dyslexia and have no one out there to help them, it's hard to get out in the world. But when someone comes to help them a whole new world will opened up for them, but if you take the help away they cannot go as far as they would like to. I have dyslexia and I got help from Anne. If it wasn't for her I would not be able to write this letter to you. She has helped us so please help her to help more people."
The stories we hear from our students . . .
"The program is good. It is the best thing a person can do."
"I no longer have to be afraid and scared that I will be fired for not knowing how to read and write."
"I feel more comfortable leaving someone a note that no one will laugh about."
"The fear [of people finding out I could not read] was replaced with a tutor who is understanding and willing to help me understand what my problems were and to correct them."
" Before I came to the Literacy Coalition I had been stuck with no options. Other people always seemed to have more options in life. In the same way I was so unlucky. I'm lucky I came to the Literacy Coalition. I believe without a doubt I would have gone my whole life as it was before. Now I won't that is the best feeling in the whole world! Even though it is me that has to do it, I have the whole Literacy Coalition behind me and family and friends.! They keep me going even when I don't think I can. Now the first time in my life I say I will rather than saying I can't. To all the Literacy Coalition tutors and staff thank you for all you do for us. Thanks for hearing my story."

"I was going through life by just getting by. I used landmarks to give directions or used them to get somewhere when driving. I avoided things that required reading and spelling. At times I felt depressed and ashamed. When I was unable to help my children with their schoolwork, I let my husband help them. I was very good at keeping my secret. Most people who knew me would be shocked to learn that I was a non-reader.
One day I heard people talking about an article in the newspaper about a local butcher who couldn't read either. He overcame his inability by going to Fox Valley Literacy Coalition. That day the sun came out and I felt, "Hey, I can maybe, just maybe, climb out from this avalanche made by never learning to read well." That is why I am here today, learning to read and write. Who knows, someday I may be able to help my children with their homework and actually be able to pick my own career path."
