Meet Your Neighbor
Late last year, Chad was introduced to the Fox Valley Literacy Council. He arrived as a bright young man, with hopes of improving his life and eager to learn. Still, Chad had trouble learning in a traditional setting and needed extra mentoring to remain focused. He dropped out of Menasha High School before completing 12th grade due to social and behavioral barriers and then got into some minor trouble with the law. Working toward bettering his life, Chad signed up for COTS Young Adult Program and through collaboration with COTS Learning Matters, Chad found his way to the Fox Valley Literacy Council.
Initially, Chad had been enrolled in Adult Basic Education classes at Fox Valley Technical College, but due to struggles with a traditional classroom setting, Chad was unable to meet academic goals and reach his full potential. Feeling overwhelmed by a system that didn’t work for him, Chad began to lose focus on obtaining his GED, though he understood the importance of achieving a GED as a foundation to his personal goals. Thankfully, Fox Valley Literacy is lucky to have volunteer tutors like Sean. While all tutors are valuable and all adult learners are capable of improvement, matching the correct pair can be vital to a learner’s success. A former instructor with Rawhide and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Sean was a perfect match for Chad. Since receiving one-on-one lessons with Sean in February, Chad has greatly improved his literacy. In fact, he passed the Reasoning through Language Arts exam for his GED. Looking to the future, Chad is hard at work preparing for the remaining portions of his exams. Once he obtains his GED, Chad hopes to find meaningful work and establish the security of his own home. He understands that commitment and hard work are necessary to obtain the independence he desires. No doubt, Chad will continue to meet and exceed his goals.
